Today's Subject

동양문화권인 한국에서 상대방과의 서열을 가리기 위해

우리나라 사람들은 상대방의 나이를 묻거나

사람들끼리 모이면 나이와 관련해서

이야기를 나누는 경우들을 심심찮게 목격하곤 합니다.

혹은 우리들의 경험을 말할 때에도

나이와 연관지어 어느 특정 시기를 이야기하기도 하지요

오늘은 이러한 표현들을 어떻게 이어나갈 것인지

정확한 표현법을 배워보도록 해요.

Today's Dialogue 1.

"the eldest" = 맏이

[ Korean ]

A: 첫째(맏딸)가(이) 내년에 대학에 들어가요

[ English ]

A: My eldest(My eldest daughter) is off to university

next year.

"the youngest" = 막내

"the middle child" = 맏이와 막내의 중간

[ Korean ]

A: 막내인 나는 이모들이 다들 오냐오냐 하지만

둘째오빠는 예쁨을 많이 못받는다.

[ English ]

A: I'm the youngest so I get spoilt by my aunties

but my brother, the middle child is often overlooked.

 

Today's Dialogue 2.

"the same age as" = 같은 나이

[ Korean ]

A: 그녀와 나는 동갑이다.

[ English ]

A: She is the same age as I am.

= She is the same age as me.

[ Korean ]

A: 그 집 아들이 우리집 아들이랑 동갑이래.

[ English ]

A: Her son is the same age as my son.

"similar age as" = 같은 나이

[ Korean ]

A: 우리 집 첫째가 친구네 딸이랑 또래라

둘이 자주 어울려.

[ English ]

A: My eldest is a similar age as

my friend's daughter so they hang out

together a lot.

A: 어머니 결혼 당시 나이는 지금의 나와 비슷했다.

[ English ]

A: My mother was a similar age as I am now

when she got married.

"be in one's early twenties" = 20대 초반

"be in one's early thirties" = 30대 초반

"be in one's early fourties" = 40대 초반

"be in one's early fifties" = 50대 초반

"be in one's mid twenties" = 20대 중반

"be in one's late twenties" = 20대 후반

[ Korean ]

A: 40대 중반이 20대 초반보다 더 자신감이 넘친다.

[ English ]

A: People in their mid-fourties are more confident

than people in their early-twenties.

A: 이제 20대 후반에 접어들었으니 집에 대한 고민을

해야 한다.

A: Now that I'm in my late twenties,

"in the '70s" = 70년대

"in the '80s" = 80년대

"in the '90s" = 90년대

"in the Seventies" = 70년대

"in the Eighties" = 80년대

"in the Nineties" = 90년대

A: 나는 90년대에 태어났다.

나는 90년대 초반에 태어났다.

[ English ]

A: I was born in the '90s.

I was born in the early '90s.

is off to university : 대학에 들어가다

get spoilt by : ~에게 예쁨을 받다

overlook : 간과하다, 못보고 넘어가다

(잘못된 것을)못 본 체 하다.

hang out : ~와 어울리다

bleach : ~을 표백하다

blonde : 금발인

bleach blonde : An obviously unnatural shade of

blonde that many girls in today's society dye

their hair because they think it makes them

appear "hotter" and more appealing to men when

in reality, it disgusts most men and turns them

away.
